The speed of light: a limit on influence

The invariant speed imposes a finite delay on communication and causation. Apparent exceptions describe medium, geometry or measurement rather than a signal exceeding c.

01 / Vacuum, locally

A speed that also organizes causality.

Light in vacuum travels at c: exactly 299,792,458 metres per second in SI units. The exact number reflects the definition of the metre. The physical statement underneath is deeper: special relativity uses the same invariant speed to relate space and time for inertial observers. It is the boundary for local causal influence in that theory.

Observers moving relative to one another do not agree on every distance or elapsed time. They do agree on the spacetime interval between events. A light signal traces a null interval. Massive objects follow timelike paths, remaining inside the local light cone. Calling c merely the speed of a particularly fast object misses this geometric role.

Accelerating an object with nonzero rest mass ever closer to c requires an ever larger energy in a chosen inertial frame. In special relativity, its total energy is γmc², where γ grows without bound as speed approaches c. Adding fuel does not provide a finite-energy route across the boundary.

Delay = distance/c. A light-second is a distance. No processing, routing, atmospheric or gravitational delay is included.

Latency is a design constraint, too.

A remote instrument cannot react to information that has not arrived. Engineers can predict motion, buffer data or let a local controller act independently, but these techniques change how a system handles delay; they do not remove propagation time. Distinguishing prediction from observation is especially important when an interface makes a distant operation feel immediate.

The slider expresses the earliest possible vacuum arrival in its chosen frame. An actual connection adds transmission, processing and routing delays. A measured round trip also need not divide into equal outward and return times without further assumptions.

Apparent exceptions ask different questions.

Light slows in material media because its propagation involves the material's response. Different definitions of wave speed then matter. A phase crest or the peak of a reshaped pulse can behave in ways that do not describe a new message travelling faster than c. One must track how controllable information is introduced and detected.

Entangled particles can exhibit correlations incompatible with local hidden-variable models, but an observer cannot select a distant measurement outcome to send a message. Comparing the records still requires an ordinary communication channel. A distant shadow moving rapidly across a surface likewise carries no command sideways from one shadow position to the next.

Cosmological recession is another distinct case. In an expanding spacetime, the growth of a chosen large-scale distance can exceed c. This is not a nearby observer measuring an object overtaking a passing light ray. Local light cones remain the relevant causal structure; global distances require a specified cosmological model.

Game engine

A designer may impose an arbitrary projectile speed, update interval or network delay. These are engineering choices in a model.

Physical universe

Relativity constrains how local clocks, distances and signals relate. A numerical resemblance to software does not establish a simulator.

What if c were different?

Changing a dimensional number alone can amount to changing units. A meaningful alternative universe must specify dimensionless relationships and which other physical quantities remain fixed. Otherwise the question has no unique answer: atomic structure, electromagnetic interactions and gravitational dynamics are connected through more than one constant.

A hypothetical communication model can vary its maximum signal speed while holding specified assumptions fixed. Its resulting delays do not establish that a physical universe has one editable speed parameter.
